This Week’s Staff Picks – September 28

This week we have a nice selection including wine, beer and a single malt. For wine we chose two South American wines, Pascual Toso Malbec and Montes Classic Cabernet Sauvignon. For beer we chose the just released Allie’s Donuts Double Chocolate Porter from Narragansett beer and we chose Caribou Crossing Single Barrel Canadian Whisky for the single malt.

Allie’s Double Chocolate Porter

IMG_0211This collaboration between Narragansett Beer and Allie’s Donuts, the famous Rhode Island donut shop, is a real treat. Inspired b Allie’s famous old-fashioned double chocolate donuts, this beer is a blend of Narragansett Beer’s classic porter with chocolate malt, cocoa nibs and a hint of vanilla. This creates a deliciously smooth, dark beer that is complex and flavorful. On the palate it has a chocolately base with a roasty body from the chocolate malt and a nice finish with hints of vanilla. It comes in sizable 16 ounces cans and has 5.5% ABV.  This is a delicious beer and a great afternoon dessert, perfectly accompanied by some chocolate donuts.

IMG_0221Caribou Crossing is the world’s first single barrel Canadian whisky. It’s aged in oak for many years to create a complex, smooth and rich flavor and 40% ABV. This is an unparalleled Canadian whiskey, each bottle is handcrafted by an expert whisky making team and each barrel is bottled individually under their expertise. This whisky has a very pleasant aroma with notes of grain husk, whole nuts, honeyed raisin toast and some delicate anise cookie. This continues into a soft and dry medium body with some subtle spice and tobacco notes. If you are looking for a quality hand crafted whisky look no further, this is a smooth and quality-centric whisky down to the beautiful package.

Pascual Toso Malbec

IMG_0215Currently we are selling this great Argentinean wine for $8.99 each or you can get 2 for $16.98. This Malbec comes from Pascual Toso, one of Argentina’s oldest and most prestigious wineries. It is produced using Malbec grapes that give it its rustic medium body. On the nose there is an aroma with hints of violet, blackberry and coffee. On the palate the fruity flavors become apparent with some spicey notes. It leads to a long finish with its hints of oak and smokey accents of vanilla. This is a great red wine to enjoy with meat dishes and pastas.

Montes Classic Cabernet Sauvignon

IMG_0218This is a Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon that is being sold for $8.98 or you can get 2 for $16.98. This Cabernet Sauvignon is produced in the Colchagua Valley, one of the best areas to make wine in Chile, and is aged in French oak for six months. It has a pleasant ruby-red color. On the nose there are notes of caramel, candy, cinnamon and hints of mint but does not contain any strong oakiness. It has a good body with a fruity flavor with firm tannins, notes of vanilla and a good strong finish. This is an elegant wine that is not expensive and does not sacrifice quality.
