This Week’s Staff Picks – September 14

This week our staff has picked a large amount of great products. With fall more or less here it’s time to enjoy some great fall beer and wine. We chose some great beer, wine and liqueur. For beer we chose two beers from Ballast Point Brewing Company, the Pumpkin Down and the Dead Ringer. For wine we chose Luke Donald Collection LDC Red and Luke Donald Chardonnay and for liqueur we chose Pennsylvania Dutch Egg Nog.

Ballast Point Pumpkin Down

IMG_0201Produced in San Diego California, Ballast Point Pumpkin Down is one of there many seasonal brews. With the Autumn season approaching, pumpkin becomes a popular and it is only natural to make a delicious pumpkin flavored beer. On the nose there are notes of dried caramel, cherry, earthy notes and of course some pumpkin pie spices. On the palate there are very noticeable notes of pumpkin pie spices as well as notes of caramel, cherry, and toffee. It finishes spicy and slightly smoky. During the brewing process it goes through a three hour boil that enhances the caramel and toffee flavors. This is a great pumpkin flavored beer with 5.8 ABV and perfect for the family get togethers.

Ballast Point Dead Ringer

IMG_0197This beer has a nice orange reddish brown color when poured into a cup. On the nose it has a complex aroma with notes of baked biscuits, hop spice, caramel nutty toasted malts and some grassy hops. On the palate it is slightly bitter with some nice toasted, doughy malts, overall malty and delicious. It has a good creamy texture and medium body with 6% ABV. This is a great beer and because of that it one two awards, the gold awards at the 2012 San Diego International Beer Festival & Competition and the Silver award at the California State Fair.

Pennsylvania Dutch Egg Nog

IMG_0187This is a great liqueur made with dairy cream, rum, brandy and blended whiskey that comes b a 750ml bottle and with 14.75% ABV. It has a creamy color when poured. It is very rich and smooth and has the sweet flavor that comes with an egg nog. It is a great egg nog with a kick. Perfect for the upcoming holidays and all the parties that come with it.

Luke Donald Collection LDC Red

IMG_0190The “Luke Donald Collection wines are the result of a long-standing friendship between two men who have a passion for excellence. Bill Terlato and Luke Donald share a passion for excellence on the golf course, and a deep appreciation for quality wines.” This wine is made in the traditional European style. Made with 4 different grapes, 44% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet France and 8% Petit Verdot this is a complex wine. On the nose there are notes of black cherry, black berry and spicy notes. The flavor is complex with plum and cherry flavors with hints of delicate dark chocolate and coffee bean. It is very elegant with a lush texture and velvety tannins.

Luke Donald Chardonnay

IMG_0194“Born and raised in England, Luke has an affinity for the great white Burgundies of France.” This idea led to creating an elegant and well balanced chardonnay. This chardonnay has a light straw color On the nose it has an aroma rich in apple, caramel with notes of citrus blossom. On the palate it is minerally with lovely notes of vanilla, golden apple and honey. It has balanced acidity and a long, bright finish. This a fantastic, well balanced chardonnay perfect for pairing with a nice seafood meal.
