This week’s picks include two great beers and 3 high quality wines. For beer we chose The Naughty Nurse and Blonde On Blonde from City Steam Brewery in Hartford, Connecticut. For wine we chose 3 wines from Ferrari Carano Vineyards, the Bella Luce, Siena and Pinot Grigio.
The Naughty Nurse
The Naughty Nurse comes from Connecticut based brewery City Steam Brewery. The Naughty Nurse is made using hops of English varieties including Challenger, Fuggles and Goldings hops. It has a medium level of hoppiness. The beer has a coppery brown color with a short white head when poured into a glass. The aroma is malty with notes of nuts, honey and citrus. On the palate it has a hearty malt character with some sweetness and flavors of caramel, citrus and a note of spice. It is crisp and smooth with a medium body and a nice amount of hoppiness. It finishes with a sweet caramel aftertaste. A great beer for any occasion made here in New England with 5% ABV. It also pairs well with a good hamburger.
Blonde On Blonde
Another great beer from City Steam Brewery, Blonde On Blonde won 1st place in the Pale Ale category at the Great International Beer Festival in Providence, R.I. This beer is brewed using German hops for bitterness and Zythos and Cascade hops for the aroma. It has a nice bright orange color when poured with a nice white head. On the nose it has notes of nuts, malty and floral hoppy notes, that create a nice balance. On the palate this some hop bitterness with note of citrus, herbs and grainy malts with a light sweetness and toasty finish. It is very well-balanced and very easy to drink with 6.6% ABV. This is a great hoppy ale for any occasion that rightfully deserves it’s 1st place prize at the Great International Beer Festival.
This wine comes from the Ferrari-Carano Vineyards in Geyserville, California a region in the famous wine making region of Sonoma County. This 2012 vintage is a quality red wine. It is produced using 4 different grapes, Malbec, Sangiovese, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon. This mix creates a wine with a delectable and complex aroma and flavor. On the nose, there are notes of just about everything, raspberry jam, blackberry, pomegranate, vanilla, cocoa powder, licorice, cinnamon, cola, juicy bing cherry, and blueberry. On the palate there are flavors rich in raspberry jam, blackberry, spice and cinnamon. Also there are sweet notes of oak and hints of butterscotch from the barrel-aging. The tannins are supple and soft that coat the moth with the right amount of viscosity. It finishes with a lingering finish that makes you want more. This is a fantastic red wine with 14.5% ABV. Perfectly paired with Chicken Cacciatore dinner.
This quality white wine is produced using grapes that are hand-harvested and gently wholecluster pressed to minimize any color or harsh tannin extraction. They are then stored in stainless steel tanks for cold fermentation. This creates an unparalleled quality and texture. This Pinot Grigio has elegant aromas rich in white peach, green apple and melon with hints of floral and citrus zest. The texture is silky and round. On the palate it is similar to the aroma with flavors of green apple, apricot, white peach, citrus zest and floral hints. The wine is crisp and bright with the concentrated flavors lingering at the finish with 13.7% ABV. A great white wine with a focus on quality, best accompanied with light pastas and fish dishes.
Another white wine from Ferrari-Carano Vineyards, the Bella Luce is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Muscat Canelli, Pinot Blanc and Gewürztraminer. Bella Luce means beautiful light in Italian and is fitting for it’s beautiful straw yellow color and quality. On the nose it is pleasant with notes of jasmine, honeydew, and orange creamsicle. On the palate there delicious layers of pear, orange blossom, peach with hints of lemon, lime, spicy vanilla and some floral notes.
